Alcohol Inks on a Canister - Ideas for Tim Holtz, TRex Inks, Cerne Relief. Upscaling Home Decor

Let's decorate an old canister set with alcohol inks and Cerne Relief! The Cerne Relief acts as a border to restrict the alcohol ink movement and keep it in our design. It also provides some accent spots to really draw in the eye. The alcohol ink colors are bright and fun and provide their usual colorful "punch". After I decorated the canister on camera I went back in with a micro applicator an...

    Hi, I am learning so much watching your video. I am really getting into playing around with alcohol inks and washers, but I’ve been working with alcohol ink for quite a while. What I’m doing with the washers is putting brown alcohol ink colors on it and making it look like woodgrain, and there are people that actually think these are pieces of wood and not metal! I do my resin pens this way! It’s a process, but I enjoy doing it so much! You now have a new subscriber.

      @@SargentBubblescom Thank YOU for your response! I didn’t have a “stamper” so I attached a piece of felt to the bottom of a bottle of some old nail polish!! Worked great! You have no idea how excited this silly girl was! Ohhh and another thing I meant to say…I think you and I are kindred spirits, sisters from another mister, etc. because I love BLING too!! The sparklier the better!!! And the trick to getting the wood grain is painting the washers with white spray paint first, let dry, then go in with a brush and the ginger or carmel alcohol ink and “paint” them. So fun!!

    I just subscribed! I was just wondering if the gel activates the inks a little. Should I varnish first? Also do I need the UV lights for the resin? Thanks

    • @SargentBubblescom
      @SargentBubblescom 8 місяців тому

      You only need the lights if you are using UV resin. If you are going to use regular resin, then you just have to wait for the resin to cure (keep it flat and put an inverted box or something over the top so dust, animal hair, etc can't get into the resin) - if you use the UV resin, then you need the UV lights. No need to varnish before adding the resin - the resin does not activate the alcohol inks, so you are safe there. Watch the amount of resin you use - you'll use less than you think you need. I used a toothpick to spread out the resin on the washer. Using a toothpick also allows you to dome the resin nicely. If you wind up going the UV resin route, then the lightbox you need isn't really expensive - look on Amazon. It's the same lights one would use for a gel manicure.

    Hi! I’m new to this…. I had to water down my craft paint because it was too thick. I think I may have put in too much water! Because the inside looks “crappy”. Will putting another coat - of thicker paint - fix the problem? Thank you!!

    • @SargentBubblescom
      @SargentBubblescom 9 місяців тому

      Hi there - I'm so glad you tried this! You can try adding another coat of paint; the problem is that it will stack up on top of the paint that shows. (I hope that makes sense.) I would try it to just see what happens being prepared to have to start over on another ornament. I sure hope it works for you! Please let me know if you have any more questions. Happy holidays!

    Great idea! Maybe dots of pva glue could be applied to stick the foil as it dries clear? Here in the UK we can buy strands of wired tiny lights very cheaply - maybe one light inside each bauble would make a pretty hanging row of decorations?

    Hi, there brilliant. Have you ever put the inks inside them instead of the outside?

    • @SargentBubblescom
      @SargentBubblescom 11 місяців тому

      Yes - they wind up a muddy mess. At least, that was my experience. You also don't have the same control as pouncing the inks on. But whenever I dripped ink onto the inside, no matter how long I waited, they still globbed up and became a mess. Go ahead and give it a try tho - maybe you'll be much better at it than I was! I wish you the very best - no matter which technique you choose to try! 😊

    Probably too long ago, but do you have an idea of why the blue was looking gritty? Is that just the way that brand acts?

    • @SargentBubblescom
      @SargentBubblescom Рік тому

      Hi there - I never figured that out. I guess it had something to do with how the blue and the paper played together. I wouldn't discount that brand entirely - they make good alcohol inks. It also may have been a fluke in my technique - I wasn't very experienced when I made this. (AT ALL.) I would chalk it up to use error more than anything. ;)

  • @Naturally336

    I tend to learn more from the trials then the ones that come out "perfect", so I appreciate that you put it out there! I had someone ask me once regarding the many different art forms I dabble in if I ever fail. I had honestly never thought about it and responded that "No, if it's not right, I'm not done". With this piece, it has some gorgeous potential! Try putting another thin layer over it and let the blue run through the rocks so it looks intentional. Then for the stripes, again another layer but intentionally let the colors streak together? Maybe with a little white to give it a kinda smokiness? Ok, I'm off to binge more of your vids, the few I've watched have hooked me. :)

    • @SargentBubblescom
      @SargentBubblescom Рік тому

      You're so sweet! Thank you for saying my videos "hooked" you. That's really kind! I actually finished this piece and my daughter took it. That's one thing I can count on - my daughter thinks everything I make is pretty good (and she's not even legally blind!) so she winds up taking most of my art and hanging it in her apartment. It's nice that she feels that way. I appreciate you watching my videos and I hope you get something out of them. I am in the process of changing the channel over to purely soap making (well, and other beauty care items) so that will be next. I just have to find the time to edit all the videos I have made and turn them into something watchable! I hope you have a great day - and thank you again!

    Yes, I’de like to see that as well, you making jewlery out of them. Never heard of Yupo, what is that? I see people totally using way too much ink, like they don’t know when to stop.

    • @SargentBubblescom
      @SargentBubblescom Рік тому

      Hey! Thank you so much for commenting and subscribing -- that made my week! Yupo is a clothlike paper. It's expensive - you can get around 10 sheets for $20ish dollars. (At least, that's about what it was the last time I checked. Unfortunately, I have been out of the mixed media world for a bit. Fortunately, it's been onto a new adventure - soap making!) You can look for Yupo on Amazon; other craft suppliers usually have it. It's really just a glorified paper that alcohol ink works well on. But as I've shown in this series, many other surfaces can be used instead of Yupo. (At one point, Yupo was the go-to for alcohol inks.) I really hope this helps! If you have any other questions, please let me know. Have a great day!

    I think you need almost to have built up a series of layers of alcohol ink having dried them in between so they get to the point where they're layering over each other, for it to get that handy 'tacky' feel where foil will stick to it. You're understandably trying to speed things up for us on camera, which is never easy! Doing stuff at speed on camera and talking us through it is really difficult - people who've never done it underestimate the amount of things your brain is having to simultaneously process! 🤪 Either way, I think these all turned out absolutely _beautifully,_ and I'm definitely going to have a go at these for Christmas next year! Thank you so much for sharing your gifts with us. Good luck with with your Bubbles business! 🌲🙏🏼✨

    • @SargentBubblescom
      @SargentBubblescom Рік тому

      That's a good question. I haven't experienced this. Are you shaking the paint before using it and then giving it a couple of minutes for the bubbles (air) to settle? Maybe try cleaning the outside of the ornament with at least 91% isopropyl alcohol before painting? I would start there and see if either of those help. Happy New Year! ❤️

    What is the point of putting the white paint on the inside if you're covering the outside and you don't see it

    • @SargentBubblescom
      @SargentBubblescom Рік тому

      It provides an opaque base for the colors that go on the outside. Without it, the colors wouldn't be as strong and you could see through the ornament. Does that make sense?

    • @221b-Maker-Street
      @221b-Maker-Street Рік тому

      It makes the colours on the _outside_ really pop by giving them a white background. If you think of eg stained glass, it's always a window, so comes alive because it has a light coming through it for 'background'. Stained glass at night time doesn't look like much at all, but with the sun streaming through, it looks amazing. White paint is in effect, a form of 'backlighting' for your alcohol inks. In the same way that nearly all watercolours are painted on white paper - it makes the colours sing. 😊

    No wonder you wasted so much paint and it took so many coats, you just put the product in and let it sit. You need to swirl it around and coat the inside so the paint goes on the decoration then turn it over and let the paint that’s left drip out on the paper towel. Try it you see you have much better results, works perfect for me.
